“Just because something makes no sense does not mean that it has no reason to exist. In this world, there are things that cannot be explained, and yet they exist.”
Haruki Murakami, Kafka on the Shore
Where we continue to observe, which should hardly surprise us... that, in parallel, several stories are unfolding simultaneously. Thus Lucian, according to information that lies before our eyes... and which he does not possess... would seem to be expected. Unless our interpretation has been distorted by our own expectations as readers.
Don Carotte, his hands on his hips, taps one foot like a man waiting for an explanation, a miracle, or a horse, and getting none of the three.
He stares at the tiny blue-green creature that has just settled nonchalantly beside him on a minuscule twig with curling leaves. The animal chews placidly, its eyes half closed, as though absorbed in some form of digestive mysticism. A faint breath of air barely stirs the stiff hairs along the back of its neck.
— Come now, Sang Chaud... says Don Carotte in exasperation, let us explain things calmly. How can you expect an animal so small, so botanically insubstantial, to carry a knight, and not just any knight! A knight-errant, armoured in words... admittedly invisible to your eyes and to our age... but laden with glory, weighted with destiny?
Sang Chaud clears his throat, looking like someone who is not entirely certain whether he ought to answer.
— And besides! Don Carotte continues, raising one finger into the humus-laden air, you yourself say that they can never come down from the tree! That there is some law! A taboo! A prohibition of a mythical, cosmic, botanico-theological nature, and that if they do, they...
(He swallows.)
— ...they lose their shadow!
Sang Chaud nods slowly, his arms folded across his belly, as though already savouring his answer before he has even given it.
— That is correct, my lord. It is said in the old tales, which no one has ever written down but everyone knows... well... ought to know... that an arboreal donkey which sets its hooves upon solid ground immediately loses its shadow. And perhaps more besides...
